RateTypical Goods / Services
0%Fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, education, healthcare
5%Packaged food, edible oils, transport services, footwear under ₹1,000
12%Processed food, mobile phones, fertilizers, business class air tickets

CGST vs SGST vs IGST

For intra-state transactions (buyer and seller in the same state), GST is split equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). For example, an 18% GST becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For inter-state transactions, the full rate is collected as Integrated GST (IGST) by the centre and then distributed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the current GST rates in India?

India has four main GST rate slabs: 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Essential items are taxed at 0% or 5%, standard goods/services at 12% or 18%, and luxury or sin goods at 28% (often with an additional cess).

What is the difference between GST-exclusive and GST-inclusive amount?

GST-exclusive means the amount does NOT include GST — you add GST to it. GST-inclusive means the amount already includes GST — you extract GST from it. Use this calculator to switch between the two.

How is CGST and SGST split?

For an intra-state transaction, total GST is split equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). E.g., at 18% GST, CGST = 9% and SGST = 9%. For inter-state transactions, it becomes IGST (full rate, single component).

Is GST applicable on all goods and services?

No. Some essential items like fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, education and healthcare services are exempt from GST. Petroleum products and alcohol for human consumption are outside GST and taxed separately.

Do I need to register for GST?

GST registration is mandatory if your annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for special category states) for goods, or ₹20 lakh for services. Voluntary registration is also allowed.
